What every happened to good old American inginuity?

The news is extolling China's 60 mpg car: basically a tricycle with a top. Fooey. I once had a Ford Escort station wagon with a diesel engine. It sometimes got 50 mpg on the highway and it had doors, room for four and luggage. You could actually drive it on the highway.
